FLEX2ENERGY: ΤΗΕ GAME CHANGER

Presentation during Lopec 2024

A project that is expected to change the Green Energy Generation from photovoltaic panels across Europe, to create for the first time a mass production plant for organic Photovoltaics but also other Organic electronic Devices, such as Printed OLEDS, Sensors etc, enabling the European Union to become independent from imports from Asia was presented at the Organic Electronics Fair LOPEC in Munich on Wednesday 6 March. This is the building up the organic photovoltaic industry on European soil and gives an answer to the problem of the climate change and energy crisis. The President of the company that coordinates the project, Professor Stergios Logothetidis, described Flex2Energy as a "Game Changer", stressing that the production line that will be created will enable mass and economic production of energy and that is create a Climate Neutral Economy.

The European production line being created will mass produce 3rd generation photovoltaics that can be integrated into any surface in buildings (BIPV). Applications of organic electronics in buildings will give a new boost to the economy and provide answers to the global challenges for more and more environmentally friendly and cheap energy. In the framework of the flagship project for the whole of Europe, applications of organic photovoltaics for buildings, cars, Agriculture (Agrivoltaics) will be developed. The President of Organic Electronic Technologies and the HOPE-A Association of Greek Enterprises Stergios Logothetidis referred in particular to the applications of 3rd generation photovoltaics in greenhouses and open field cultivations and stressed that the use of agrovoltaics ensures all three, energy generation, enhance crop production and water savings at the same land!

Flex2Energy is a 48-month project with an ambitious goal to manufacture reliable Integrated Photovoltaics (IPVs) Products by developing an Automated R2R (Roll-to-Roll) Manufacturing Line for Organic PVs (OPVs). The Manufacturing Line consists of the R2R Printing & Automated Assembly Machines, with robust and adaptive in-line metrologies for quality control and Artificial Intelligence (AI) analysis implementing industry 4.0 concepts. The IPVs will be produced in custom designs complying to the requirements of use in buildings, greenhouses for energy production & crop harvesting and automotive EV car roofs, to minimize landscape and to facilitate energy positive buildings. The IPV products will be installed in dedicated business cases (BIPVs, Agri-PVs, VIPVs) and will be evaluated in terms of performance, durability and social and industrial acceptance.

"OPVs and perovskite cells for photovoltaics are new but quite mature technologies that can offer autonomy to Europe in the photovoltaic sector", emphasized among others COATEMA Vice President Thomas Kolbusch. He explained that the flagship project Flex2Energy is expected to promote green energy applications and is a milestone for the EU's energy autonomy and its independence from China and Asia. Coatema has invested in renewable energy development of new batteriesand fuel cell systems and more powerful, flexible solar cells Coating solutions for batteries, while the company is considered a leader In the fields of coating and printing.
